Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Girls are not allowed to have unique voices. Guys can mumble and barely enunciate a lot of their words (Thom Yorke, Elliott Smith, Conor Oberst, Justin Vernon, etc.), but when women sing, they must all sound like only slight variations of each other and must maintain…
I’m sorry, but who the fuck is saying that Lana Del Rey has a ‘unique voice’? From all that I’ve heard, she falls into the same waifish personality-type class that so many female lounge singer types had in the 40’s, except she doesn’t have the pipes to back it up like so many of those women did. If you want to talk about unique voices, go find something unique.
Guess what? the airy, detatched, barely-intelligble voice is boring, no matter what gender you are. At least people like Thom Yorke, or Conor Oberst, who you brought up, obviously not blessed with typically pleasing voices, make up for that with interesting musical arrangements, using their voices creatively, and writing compelling lyrics. And there are plenty of female performers that do this as well, like Jenny Lewis (although her voice is quite delightful), Joanna Newsom, Patti Smith, and Kathleen Hanna. Those people are performers. Lana Del Rey is one step above one of those youtube channels full of someone’s shoddy karaoke videos.

reason indie rockers can dance awkwardly on stage...guys can mumble their lines is...
Jesus Christ, maybe some people don’t like LDR because they just don’t like her. Yes her voice is unique but that’s not...
